Common Questions
Can my landlord enter my apartment without notice?
Generally, no. Most states require 24-48 hours notice for non-emergencies. True emergencies (fire, flood) allow immediate entry.
What if my landlord refuses to fix things?
Document issues in writing (certified mail). Some states allow "repair and deduct" or rent withholding, but this is risky—check local laws.
How long to return my security deposit?
Typically 14-30 days after move-out. They must itemize deductions. "Normal wear and tear" cannot be deducted.
Can I be evicted without a court order?
No. "Self-help" evictions (changing locks, throwing out belongings) are illegal everywhere. Landlords must win in court first.
