Reasons for Name Change
Common reasons include marriage, divorce, gender transition, or simply personal preference. The process is the same regardless of reason.
Step 1: File a Petition
File a “Petition for Name Change” with your local court. You’ll need to provide:
- Your current legal name
- Your desired new name
- Reason for the change
- Filing fee (varies by state, typically $150-$500)
Step 2: Publication (if required)
Some states require you to publish notice of your name change in a local newspaper. This is to give creditors or others a chance to object.
Step 3: Court Hearing
Attend the hearing. The judge will ask basic questions and, if there are no objections, grant the name change.
Step 4: Update Your Documents
With your court order, update:
- Social Security card (free)
- Driver’s license
- Passport
- Bank accounts
- Credit cards
- Employer records
